Recreation-Types of Theme Parks

Types of Theme Parks

Historical or cultural
e.g Balboa Park San Diego: The culture heart of San Diego

The annual Balboa Park Explorer is the first-ever annual pass that provides general admission to 17 cultural institutions. The Explorer is available online, at the Visitors Center, or at participating museums.

Encompassing nearly 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is a magnificent cultural complex that includes 17 museums, eight major gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Often referred to as the "Smithsonian of the West," Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in North America, exceeding even Central Park in New York in size. Filled with cultural treasures, architectural grandeur, lush landscapes, stunning gardens and award-winning performing arts, it will take more than one day to see and enjoy it all.

Touting itself as the roller coaster capital of the world, Cedar Point’s 17 coasters will ensure you’re riding all day. Enthusiastic reader Alicia Goettemoeller describes the park as an “adrenaline junkie’s paradise,” while reader Nick Schuyler says it is “built for grown-up kids.”

2. Knoebels

This old-fashioned amusement park is a must for nostalgic types as well as the budget conscious – admittance and parking are free of charge. Reader Tracy Ginsburg Maier says “a family of 4 can eat, swim and ride all day for $100” at Knoebels.

3. Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom

No list of amusement parks would be complete without the happiest place on earth, Disney’s Magic

The AIA Great European Carnival
Head on down to the seaside for some good old-fashioned family fun this winter as the AIA Great
European Carnival sets up shop after an eight-year hiatus. Taking up residence at the New Central Harbourfront, the huge funfair and festival promises to deliver three action-packed months by the harbour. Expect thrilling rides, crazy entertainers, great games and, of course, a carnival atmosphere.

It was back in 2006 when the AIA World Carnival, as it was known then, last hit the waterfront. That event was a huge success – and this year promises to be even bigger and even better than that. Organisers say they’re expecting a whopping one million visitors over three months as the fair kicks off in December and runs until February (the exact dates are yet to be confirmed). And, not only that, the carnival is already booked to return annually over the next couple of years. A sign of just how much effort is being pumped in to make this a massive success

While there is more yet to be confirmed, we do know the carnival has cost a cool $130million so far – so it’s likely there’ll be more on hand than just a coconut shy and hook-a-duck. In fact, the extravaganza boasts 10 scary ‘thrill rides’, 10 or more ‘family rides’ and at least 50 ‘attractions and games’, which all open their gates in December. Indeed, an incredible 1,000 tonnes of machinery in the form of rides that have been carefully selected and imported from all over Europe are on their way to us as you read this. Many of these attractions are making their first ever appearance in Asia.
If stomach churning coasters aren’t your idea of a good time, however, the carnival also promises traditional attractions, including bumper cars, a carousel, a fun house and a house of horrors. For an added European flair, there’s a mini ‘tour of Europe’, which lets you snap selfies in front of a series of iconic landscapes and landmarks. A host of specialist entertainers and attractions from Europe are also coming to town, including stilt walkers, jugglers and even a real life strong man.

A good carnival brings out the kid in all of us. With classic funfair food from Castelo Concepts and more than half a million stuffed toys to be won, this is set to be a day out that’s just perfect for the kids. And the big kids, of course.
